Hello beautiful humans!
My name is Kyla! I am a (newly-ish) retired volleyball player — 5 years at UBC, 10 years playing professionally worldwide, and 15 years representing Team Canada. I started a blog and a website many, many moons ago when I realized the media coverage for our Women’s National Team was not up to par. I created a space that highlighted my fabulous teammates and shared about our trainings, travels, and competitions.
I always had a journal with me, but through that blog, came a sense of responsibility to share our side of the story and advocate for my teammates and myself — on how hard we were working and what we were trying to accomplish. Through that came a desire to be fully me, fully seen, and fully share everything that life had dealt me, on and off the court. From volleyball highs and lows to struggling through grief back in 2012 when my family lost my brother to a tragic accident, I had a relentless need to open up parts of myself through writing.
Here we are today after many years hiatus.
What’s happened in these few years? I retired from Team Canada of course, my husband and I started a winery — Valley Commons, and acquired Stoneboat Vineyards, we moved to Fort Langley (bought an acreage place with my in-laws), had a baby boy (Mackie) an then another 22 months later (Wesley), and many more “milestones” I won’t bore you with.
My brilliant and wonderful Dad passed away suddenly 2 years ago, halfway through my pregnancy with Mackie. This shook me back to rock bottom and I found my fractured family once again, treading water and picking up the pieces of life. Dad was my biggest writing advocate. He was the first to read any blog I posted and was always nudging me to write more. I’m “picking up the keyboard again” so-to-speak, knowing how happy that would make Dad. And breathing a little easier because I know how happy this makes ME.
So buckle up, kids. We’re sharing it all. Athletics, grief, motherhood, entrepreneurship, and everything in between.
Welcome here.
